March 31, 2009 Safestone Technologies, the World’s leading supplier of System i security and compliance solutions, announces a comprehensive PCI compliance assessment for System i shops. The assessment demonstrates how well an organization’s System i measures up to the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS). The PCI compliance assessment is available for download at www.safestone.com.
Safestone will be releasing a series of security assessments for the System i in 2009 and have decided to focus their first compliance assessment on PCI Data Security Standards. Penalties for failing to comply with PCI Data Security Standards are becoming more severe. VISA and Mastercard are taking extreme actions against companies who fail to protect consumer data. It has been reported that Heartland Systems, one of the largest credit card processing companies in the US, has been removed from VISA’s list of service providers because of their recent data breach that involved 1.5 million customers. Heartland is currently undergoing a PCI assessment to rectify the situation. PCI compliance does not guarantee an organization can prevent a security breach, but it does help to ensure every measure is taken to secure sensitive customer information.
“The data security breach at TJX really brought the necessity for PCI compliance to light and auditors are now taking a closer look at how customer data is secured and stored at companies,” says Terry Heath Safestone COO, “No one wants their company associated with the type of breach TJX experienced. This breach resulted in 94 million accounts being compromised with losses exceeding $70 million due to fraud. We want to give System i shops an easy way to be proactive when it comes to PCI compliance by sharing our years of experience through offering this free assessment to any company with a System i.”
The PCI compliance assessment starts with a system scan that runs in just a matter of minutes and then completely uninstalls from the System i upon completion. Companies who complete the assessment receive a comprehensive report which shows how their System i measures up to the following PCI DSS requirements:
• Build and Maintain a Secure Network
• Protect Cardholder Data
• Maintain a Vulnerability Management Program
• Implement Strong Access Control Measures
• Regularly Monitor and Test Networks
• Maintain an Information Security Policy
The report organizations receive not only shows the results from the assessment, it also offers recommendations for improvement, giving a roadmap for organizations to follow.
The results Safestone is seeing, where the PCI Compliance Assessment has been used, are typical with security in general on the System i. Areas of focus for security on the platform continue to be in controlling access through exit points, managing powerful users and auditing activity.
